A Curated Group Exhibition Revisiting and Reimagining Many of Art History’s “Greatest Hits” through Contemporary Eyes

Contemporary Classic brings together five artists whose work references and revisits visual narratives from art history. These “greatest hits” or “classics” from art history created a foundation for the art of later generations, but they have been impactful in ways that are both positive and negative. The five artists in this show–Angela Fraleigh, Carlos GÁmez de Francisco, Klaire Lockheart, Vitus Shell, and Ayam Yaldo–explore these complicated ideas from the gaze to the effects of warfare on the loss of visual culture.

As a woman of color and a first-generation American, photography is a tool for Chantal Lesley to explore the intersections of her cultural identity, empower herself, and encourage viewers to challenge their own preconceived ideas.
